19TH ANNUAL SUSSIE VAN FREDEN NOVICE LAWN BOWLS TOURNAMENT
Oakdale Bowls Club hosted the 19th annual Sussie van Freden Novice Lawn Bowls Tournament. The tournament was played over three Sundays with the finals being played on 7 Nov 21. This tournament was the brainchild 20 years ago of Sussie van Freden, the past patron of Oakdale Bowls Club. Sadly Sussie passed away earlier this year.
All the teams consist only of novices that have been playing lawn bowls for three years or less. 22 teams from clubs across the peninsula participated with 12 teams eventually qualifying to play in the final rounds. On the final day the first round was an Open-draw followed by two rounds of Strength- versus-strength.
Spectators and players alike were entertained by excellent quality of bowling. Skills displayed bode well for the future of lawn bowls and it is almost certain that many players will eventually reach high levels on District and even National level. Games were played in a healthy, competitive spirit and great sportmanship was displayed.
Lawn Bowls is truly a sport for all. The youngest participant is 13 years of age with the eldest in the 70s.
The reigning champions Oakdale, successfully defended their title with Durbanville taking second and third place.
Oakdale Club wish to thank all the participants, sponsors and organisers for another successful tournament and hope to present the 20th Sussie van Freden again in October 2022.
